Marking time – rhythmic improvisation

Explicating Measure – by Genji Siraisi & Chris Theberge

My life is best explained as a series of rhythmic improvisations. My search for meaning, to find my place with others, to understand why I’m here. I guess seeking meaning in the world describes much of humanity’s consciousness, from seeking our basic needs, to fulfilling fantasies we were unaware we had, to math, science, and religion. To me, playing music, dancing, and singing are vital forms of existing as a human. They allow the magical transformation of space and time. I believe in magic. After all, the mystical has always been just what science can’t explain yet, and any true believer in science recognizes we will never understand all the forces, mediums, or planes of all existence – let alone those forces that make up the small universe we encounter through life, inside and out.

I feel blessed to have had a life in music, to feel the magic of stretching time, but it does not come without its issues in a world that generally values money more than art. We all need magic to truly understand our existence – it does not have a value. It can be given a value, but that is another form of human creativity and a topic for another day. Playing music to me, at its best, is being partially possesed by ancient, unknown forces, and in that form, it is a superpower allowing me to traverse time, space, and even life itself. The ego of consciousness may seek to make our mark, but the transformational and telekinetic work of music and art are forces I believe go way beyond time and self.

Looking at these images makes me realize all along I’ve been marking my time in this plane, trying to send messages to listeners beyond those present, to whom I’m not sure. Perhaps inside me or in far off world or microcosm. It is pure connection and expression interconnected to all, if only we can let go of self, dogma, and all the other pitfalls of human consciousness, while remaining human and humane, loving and being loved.
